The Sacred Valley of the Incas is an extensive valley located in the Peruvian Andes, in an area between the towns of Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Maras and Moray, irrigated by the Vilcanota-Urubamba River.
It was highly appreciated by the ancient Inca empire due to its special geographic and climatic qualities, becoming one of its main production points due to the richness of its lands. In fact, it is the place where the best corn grain in Peru is produced.
The Sacred Valley has wonderful landscapes, where Andean communities live and preserve ancestral customs and traditions, a sample of Cusco’s living culture. Also, this place is home to numerous archaeological monuments, a legacy of Inca splendor and wealth.
The Incas built thousands of terraces for the cultivation of various products such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, quinoa and more. Perhaps the most beautiful of all was Moray, a circular system of terraces that survives to this day. Nearby, there are natural salt wells formed thousands of years ago. This place is called the salt mines of Maras and, together with Moray, are two of the most popular tourist attractions in Cusco. The tour, in addition, now includes a visit to the archaeological site of Chinchero.
